With holidays come houseguests. Whether you are pulling out the sofa bed or opening a guesthouse, the same small and simple touches make all the difference in making your visitors feel at home.

Guests are given keys when staying in a hotel, why not at your home? Help friends and family come and go as they please by handing out sets of keys when they arrive. Add a personal touch with vintage key chains like this one from an old hotel.

Work, school and life's responsibilities can prevent us from enjoying free time with our guests. Help your company feel like locals by leaving travel guides, maps and books on local history. Pull out the calendar section of your local newspaper and highlight some events that might be of interest.

Forget fighting over the thermostat - just be sure to stack extra blankets on the bed should your guests feel a chill. Giving guests multiple pillows skips the guesswork of wondering if they would like firm or soft, one or two.

Who knows? This vacation may be the one Aunt Jean finally finishes her tattered copy of War and Peace. Be sure to equip the bedside table with a good reading lamp. An alarm clock is also a necessity, especially if your company is in town for business. A water carafe, a bowl for small personal belongings and fresh flowers will add a perfect home-away-from-home feeling.

No matter how many pockets, zippers and wheels it has, no high-end suitcase compares to a roomy chest of drawers and bare closet rack. Empty out some space in your drawers and closets to make room for visitors' wardrobes. If storage space is scarce, consider hanging a sturdy hook like this one from Anthropologie.

No houseguest enjoys the post-shower tiptoe from the bathroom to the guestroom, clutching her towel. Avoid awkward run-ins in the hallway by providing a fluffy robe and slippers to wrap your company in luxury (and modesty).

Your preference for monochrome bath towels may achieve a minimalist look in your bathroom but it backfires when you have company in town. To assure guests their towels are used by them and only them, sew colorful cotton ribbon loops onto each towel. For each towel cut a 6" piece of sturdy ribbon and sew the two ends onto the edge of the towel.

Help your guests keep in touch digitally by offering a power strip near their bed to plug in a cell phone, camera, iPod or laptop. Jot down your WiFi access code and password near the power source so they can easily log on and feed their Facebook addiction.

Every good host will insist her guests "help themselves to anything in the fridge" but some still might need an extra nudge. Leave out bowls of yummy snacks to encourage nibbling. Some healthy ideas include nuts, dried fruit, dark chocolate, popcorn, edamame and fruit.
